44. Rondine

Two stanzas: one septet, one quintet. Abbaabr abbar, where r is the refrain, which is the first phrase of the first line. Tetrameter or pentameter.

I’m not feeling well. Forgive me.

This sucks.

Hurry. Watch as it plays on the stage:
A devilish ruse that holds his soul.
Look as he grovels to fulfill his role.
See him fall—watch as he begs in his cage.
See him rise—push him back onstage.
See the man, slave to pleasures we stole.
Hurry. Watch as it plays.

Laugh as his limbs falter with age—
Hear his voice crack as he asks for his toll.
That tiny lump we now bury in a hole,
Trapped in this maze, sifting page after page.
Hurry. Watch as it plays.
